In various red–light districts and alleys across Taiwan, you’ll often see certain “Vietnamese shops” advertising cheap services, with prices under a thousand per session and workers who look like students, tempting many seasoned patrons. But did you know? What you think is a bargain might just land you a starring role in a “trip to the police station.”

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Consider these three major risks of Vietnamese shops before deciding to “explore.”

The activities at Vietnamese shops may seem thrilling, but they often skirt the edge of legality.

It might seem more economical than local services, but many of these Vietnamese workers lack work permits and may even be staying illegally, placing these establishments in a legal gray area.

If you’re unlucky and encounter a police raid or crackdown, you might end up as a “supporting character” in the news. Like this case from 2024, reported by ETtoday:Vietnamese private karaoke rooms go wild! Veteran patron: Sweet talk for 1hr, earn 5,000 tips, even bathroom 1–on–2–the fun got out of hand, the place was shut down, and even the customers were taken to the police station for questioning.

2019–08–25, also saw a similar incident.Vietnamese bar raided, hostess strips naked and swings underwear in front of police“incident.”

Vietnamese shop girls have complex backgrounds, high risk of pitfalls

In Taipei’s Vietnamese establishments, the women, though often young and pretty, are frequently undocumented workers without identification, sometimes involved in illegal brokerage and human trafficking. Some even have unclear ages, and encountering a minor could lead to significant issues.

And it’s difficult to verify whether these illegal workers undergo regular health checks or if there’s a risk of infectious diseases, which means you’re essentially gambling with your life in an uncertain “life transaction.”

Besides the risk of STDs, some Vietnamese establishments (Vietnamese snack bars) also engage in illegal activities, such as “underground TWD exchange.” A Vietnamese establishment in Nantou was reported in the 2025–05–02 Taiwan Times for “A Vietnamese shop involved in underground TWD exchange, handling amounts up to 1 billion.“, if you’re in the store at that moment, it could be incredibly awkward!

Vietnamese snack bars are prone to scams or extortion, turning pleasure into disaster

You might think Vietnamese girls are cheap and accommodating, but once you’re in, you might get caught in a “Chinese to Chinese” scheme:

As soon as she entered the room, she asked for a higher price.
Halfway through, they ask for more money to continue.
Encounter fake police or accomplices secretly filming, then come back to extort you

Especially in places without third–party protection or regulation, if something goes wrong, you’re left with no one to turn to. Instead of chasing cheap thrills, it’s better to choose establishments with systems and a sense of security for peace of mind.

Licking to the point of needing medical attention? You read that right, it has happened!

You might think Vietnamese places are paradise, but sometimes they’re more like a marketplace. Even more shocking is that licking could lead to a hospital visit. According to a 2019 news report, “Toxic encounter? Farmer gets poisoned after licking at a Vietnamese place“, a middle–aged man visited a Vietnamese establishment and during the encounter, licked the woman’s chest–resulting in poisoning and a trip to the hospital!

It was later discovered that the previous customer had been working in the fields, with pesticide on his hands, and without washing, touched the woman’s chest, leaving residue on her skin. The next man who came in licked it, leading to the unfortunate incident.

“I couldn’t help but laugh, but also felt sorry for the guy who ended up in the hospital,” the original poster commented with resignation.

This isn’t a joke; it’s a real case. You might think it’s cheap and exciting, but you don’t even know if the previous customer’s hands were clean. No cleaning, no management, no process–this is the reality of many Vietnamese places.
